Along with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Chuong recommends that a child’s first dental visit be scheduled by his/her 1st birthday.
It is very important to make the first visit as positive and enjoyable for the child as possible. A pleasant, comfortable first visit builds trust and helps put the child at ease during future dental visits.
Dr. Chuong requests that parents refrain from using any words that could cause unnecessary fear, such as “needle” or “drill.” Dr. Chuong is experienced in dealing with children with anxiety and can explain treatment procedures in a positive and pleasant manner to avoid any anxious or negative feelings toward dentistry.
The majority of parents prefer to relax in the reception room during thier child's dentist visit. Studies and experience show that children react more positively when permitted to experience the dental visit on their own and in an environment designed for children, just as it is for them in school. It is not uncommon for your child to experience nervousness or separation anxiety during the initial moments of their visit. However, our staff is highly skilled in helping your child overcome anxiety.
For children under 3 years old, we generally do a “lap exam” during their first appointment. Practice at home brushing your child's teeth while laying back, a few days before their first appointment. This will ensure a better first experience.
Your child will love getting this fun letter personalized for them from the Tooth Fairy. Not only is it fun, but it also helps educate them on the importance of proper oral health care and routine visits to the Tooth Fairy’s friend, the dentist.
